Sean Dyche gives Demarai Gray update after deadline day attention

Gray was the subject of attention from Saudi Arabia, while Fulham was one of several clubs interested in the winger during the summer transfer window

Demarai Gray is set to be reintegrated into the Everton first team setup after he remained with the club through to the close of the transfer window.

The winger did not feature in any of the club’s pre-season outings following his return from international duty at the Gold Cup with Jamaica. He had been expected to leave with Fulham one of several clubs to have expressed an interest.

He was also the subject of attention from Saudi Arabia, where the professional league’s transfer window remains open.

Sean Dyche said he now expected Gray would stay with his squad, however.

Gray has not been involved in any of the club’s four Premier League matchday squads so far this season, nor the Carabao Cup tie at Doncaster Rovers. Dyche has previously stated his absence was fitness related.

The Blues boss confirmed after the draw at Sheffield United that Gray was not involved at Bramall Lane due to both fitness concerns and the speculation surrounding his future. The 27-year-old did not feature in the squad list on the Sheffield United programme and his shirt number, 11, was assigned to new signing Jack Harrison.

It now appears that after a deadline day in which four players departed and no incomings were secured, despite Dyche’s hopes otherwise, Gray’s situation has been reappraised.

Asked about his continued absence being extended to Saturday, Dyche said: “It was a bit of everything - his fitness, his fitness to play in the side, the situation around him and all of the noise. Hopefully over the next couple of weeks that will become clear and he will get himself fit as a starting point.”

Questioned whether he believed Gray would remain at the club, he added: “I do at this time.”
