Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham has admitted he was surprised to see Erik ten Hag publicly addressing his motive for leaving Jadon Sancho out of the matchday squad against Arsenal.

Following United's 3-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, Ten Hag revealed Sancho had not been named in the squad due to his performances in training.

The England international took to social media later that evening to dispute the comments, claiming he had been made a ‘scapegoat’ and that there were ‘other reasons’ for his omission that he was not willing to discuss.

MEN Sport revealed on Monday that Ten Hag stood by his comments. It remains to be seen whether disciplinary action will be taken following Sancho’s outburst.

Sheringham was asked by Sky Sports whether Sir Alex Ferguson would have done similar to Ten Hag in criticising a player in public, to which he responded: “No, not at all. Very, very rarely. I think the more you can keep these things in-house then you can control them.

“Now, with social media, people are going to have their say on what it’s all about so it just brings more hype on the situation. I’m surprised that’s happened but he must have his reasons.”

Sancho had appeared in all three of United’s Premier League games this season prior to the trip to Arsenal. The former Borussia Dortmund man has struggled to cement his place in the starting XI since the move to Old Trafford, though there was hope United fans would finally see the best of him after an encouraging cameo against Wolves on the opening day of the season.
