Former Wolves striker Steven Fletcher has joined Wrexham as a free agent after he was released by Dundee United.

The now 36 year old cost Wolves £6.5m from Burnley in 2010 and proved value for money. He made 61 league appearances, scoring 22 goals, over the next two years before a £14m move to Sunderland, a then club-record sale. His career then took in stops at Marseille, Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke before he signed for Dundee United last summer.

He scored ten goals in his season north of the border but is looking forward to his latest challenge after signing for Wrexham who are back in the Football League this season following a revival under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The striker said, in an interview with his new club: “Hopefully I can bring a lot of experience. I’m 36, I’m still fit and still raring to go. One of the biggest selling points was the ambition of the club, and if I can help with that then great. I don’t think you can not see what has been happening at Wrexham – it’s been a great experience for the fans, players and owners so hopefully we can continue that.”

Fletcher, who has 39 caps and ten goals for Scotland, joins a club who are 13th in League Two after promotion last season ended a 15 year exile from the Football League. They are without last season’s 46-goal top scorer Paul Mullin who punctured a lung in pre season.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said: “I'm really pleased with the addition of Steve to the squad. He's missed football through pre-season but he's trained today with the lads and it's good to have him on board.

"His pedigree speaks for itself, and he's played most of his career at a very high level. He's an excellent professional and that's really important to fit in with the group here.”
