Lee Johnson gets new job replacing familiar face just 14 days after Hibs sacking as CEO hypes up ‘statement of intent’

LEE JOHNSON hasn’t had to wait too long for his next managerial opportunity.

The Englishman was sacked by Hibs a fortnight ago after a terrible start to the season.

That included three league games without a win and a UEFA Conference League thrashing at the hands of Aston Villa.

Most managers like to take their time to lick their wounds after getting emptied – especially so early in the season.

But Johnson has hopped straight into another job, replacing another one-time Hibs favourite.

Former Celtic midfielder Scott Brown was sacked by Fleetwood Town recently after a similarly tough start to the campaign left the team bottom of League One.

But the club haven’t been put off by that and have looked north of the border again to recruit Broony’s successor.

And they’ve now confirmed SunSport’s story on Friday that Johnson was the man they wanted to fill the vacancy.

The 42 year-old will take the reins with immediate effect – and will be in charge for Saturday’s home game against Oxford United.

Fleeetwood chief Steve Curwood reckoned they’d landed a real coup in bringing in Johnson.

He said: “We are delighted to attract someone with the calibre and record of Lee Johnson to Fleetwood Town – we see this move as a real statement of intent at the club.

“During the process, we made it clear we were looking for an experienced manager who can help take what we feel is a very good squad up the table and help to develop the club as a whole.

“We were hugely impressed by the number of impressive candidates and after a thorough interview process, Lee was the stand-out candidate.

“We’d like to welcome him to Highbury Stadium and look forward to working with him in the future.”

For a while it looked like Brown and Johnson could actually SWAP jobs.

The former Scotland captain had been linked with a move back to Easter Road to replace Johnson.

But all signs point to ex-Central Coast Mariners boss Nick Montgomery being appointed to the Hibs hotseat – with that deal expected to be announced in the next 24 hours.
