Scunthorpe's home match with Buxton to be replayed in FULL after being abandoned in the 95th MINUTE due to torrential rain, with the visitors leading 2-1 in the National League clash

  • Scunthorpe faced Buxton in the National League on Saturday afternoon
  • The game was abandoned in the 95th minute due to torrential rain
  • Buxton were leading 2-1, but the game will now be replayed in full

Scunthorpe and Buxton have been ordered to replay their National League game in full after it was abandoned deep into stoppage time on Saturday.

Scunthorpe went into the match at the top of the table, but looked set to fall to their first defeat of the campaign as they trailed 2-1 against 10 men heading into stoppage time.

However, despite being the hottest day of the year in the UK, there was a torrential downpour as the game entered its closing stages, causing the referee to take the players off the pitch in the 95th minute.

It was then deemed that the pitch was unplayable and the match was abandoned.

It has now been confirmed that the fixture will be replayed later this season from the start rather than resuming in added time.

Buxton announced the news in a statement on their website that read: 'Following the abandonment of the Vanarama National League North fixture between Scunthorpe United and Buxton on Saturday 9 September due to adverse weather, it has been determined that the fixture will be rescheduled in full.

'The matter was considered thoroughly, with the outcome decided in line with National League regulations and previous occurrences of this nature.

'A new date for the game will be announced by the clubs in due course.'

The decision appears to be a tough blow for Buxton who were on the verge of an impressive victory on the road.

One X user claimed the club deserved to feel hard done by the decision to replay the game, admitting they'd be 'absolutely fuming' if it happened to their team.

'If that was in the EFL, Buxton's win would stand. If I was a Buxton fan, I'd be absolutely fuming at that decision to play the Scunthorpe game again. @TheVanaramaNL what are you thinking?!' they wrote.

Another X account labelled the decision to replay the game 'outrageous'.

They added: 'The Scunthorpe v Buxton game at the weekend reached the 95th minute with the away side Buxton 2-1 up, when officials decided to abandon the game due to the weather.

'The league have announced that the ENTIRE game will have to be replayed.

'Outrageous!!'

Buxton will now have to travel to Glanford Park again to try to complete the job later in the campaign.

Scunthorpe manager Jimmy Dean was also unhappy with how events played out on Saturday, claiming the players should have been taken off sooner as the rain began to fall, and that the referee ought to have waited longer for the pitch to dry out before calling the game off.

'I went on to the pitch to ask him [the referee] what was going on after he blew the whistle and I don't think he knew himself. It was when we got inside that he said it was abandoned,' Dean told BBC Radio Humberside on Saturday.

'There was no dialogue, or coming over to talk to us, and he only confirmed it was abandoned when all hell broke loose in the tunnel.

'He said the game was over when I went on the pitch and I asked what that meant because there was at least five minutes of injury time left.

'The game should have been abandoned earlier than it was because we missed a penalty, but the player couldn't see the ball.

'If I were Buxton I would want the game finished today. I'd want to go in, wait for 20 minutes and see if it dried out. The way the referee blew his whistle... it just wasn't clear at all.'
