Out-of-work Rangers hero ‘holds talks with top European club’ over manager job

GENNARO GATTUSO could be set for a return to management after being sacked by Valencia in January.

The Rangers hero has been out of work since he was axed by the La Liga club earlier this year but he has now held positive talks with a top European side, it's being claimed.

Gattuso, 45, has reportedly had "positive conversations" with French club Lyon over the vacant boss gig following Laurent Blanc's sacking yesterday.

The Frenchman paid the price for the club's dismal run of form with the team currently bottom of Ligue 1 after four games.

They failed to win a single game from the opening four fixtures and Lyon president John Textor made the decision to part ways with the former PSG and Bordeaux manager last night.

And the club's chiefs have moved quickly to identify his successor with Gattuso in the running for the position.

That's according to Fabrizio Romano who has claimed the Ibrox legend could replace the Frenchman in the dugout.

He's held talks with the club but the transfer guru has reported that they will speak to more candidates in the coming days.

Gattuso joined Rangers from Perugia in 1997 and stayed for a year before heading back to Italy to sign for Salernitana.

The midfielder went on to have a very successful career in the Serie A with Italian giants AC Milan after completing his move to the San Siro in 1999.

Gattuso was a two-time Champions League and Serie A winner with the Capital club and he was a World Cup winner with his national team in 2006.

He was handed his first coaching role with Sion in 2013 after retiring as a player following his brief stint at the Swiss side.

Gattuso has since managed Palermo, OFI Crete, Pisa, AC Milan, Napoli and Valencia.

He won his first piece of silverware as boss with Napoli after leading the club to Coppa Italia success in the 2019/20 campaign.

It's the only trophy he's won as manager but he'll be hoping to change that if he lands the Lyon job.
