Jonjo Shelvey is on the verge of signing for Turkish Super Lig side Rizespor, according to reports.

Just months after joining Nottingham Forest from Newcastle United, the 31-year-old appears to be on the move again. Shelvey started just six games for the Reds before being told to stay at home and train away from the first-team squad.

In April, the former Toon midfielder was left fuming after being named on the bench against Manchester United. Forest boss Steve Cooper would not pick Shelvey again and now it is understood his career at the City Ground may be over.

ChronicleLive understands Shelvey returned to the North East for the final month of the campaign and the situation with Cooper failed to recover over the summer. The Telegraph are reporting that he had offers to stay in England from Burnley, Sheffield United and Leeds but will seek pastures new in Turkey on a season-long loan.

Rizespor are currently fifth in the Super Lig after five games following a 1-0 win over Fatih Karagumruk. Based in the coastal city of Rize in the Black Sea region, the club shares a bitter rival with Trabzonspor.

Shelvey’s switch comes just eight months after his “emotional” deadline-day exit from Newcastle. A seven-year association with the Magpies came to an end in January after the midfielder struggled to get into the team following a hamstring injury.

“I’m not really an emotional person but the kids were a bit upset and the missus was crying when I walked out onto the pitch,” Shelvey said after his St James’ Park send-off. “Last season, when the owners took over, they really came in and made their mark. They brought the manager in and he was brilliant for me personally.

“I had a great run of games last season, we got a great winning feeling and he really enhanced that within the club. I can only wish them every success.”
