Liverpool fan details 'unlikely' Dominik Szoboszlai FaceTime exchange as LASK crowd interaction explained

Liverpool fan Quinn Curran shared a taxi experience that no one expected in Linz

Quinn Curran went viral on social media after an unlikely exchange with Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai.

The American was a passenger in a taxi with his wife, Darlene, as they shared a ride with two Hungarians - which proved to include one of Szoboszlai's former team-mates Kovacs Levente.

Curran posted a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, early on Saturday morning (September 23), which was viewed more than two million times and shared around the world.

The Utah native, who is an Official Supporters Club member of Liverpool's Las Vegas branch, found his love of football, swapping American Football and Basketball, after living in Ireland in his 20s.

His love of the Reds was sparked by watching their clashes with Manchester United during limited coverage in the United States and a rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' at half-time of the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul.

With the name 'LFC Elvis' on social media, Curran changed it on the platform after he travelled to Paris for the 2021/22 final dressed as the 'Hound Dog' singer.

Curran tries to catch as many matches home and away with the focus on whether there is a Liverpool Supporters Club in the region. While away games feel like he is in the Kop, nothing quite compares to the "Mecca" that is Anfield, he tells the ECHO.

The meeting with Szoboszlai's friends was a chance one. It was only a week before Jurgen Klopp's side were scheduled to face the Austrian Bundesliga side LASK that Curran and his wife were offered tickets by one of their friends for the Group E opener.

And it was at the hotel where they were staying that they would bump into the new Liverpool star's friends, Levente and Peter. With a taxi already booked, it was Quinn and Darlene who noticed the pair looking anxious and offered them a place on their journey to Raiffeisen Arena.

"We all squeezed in, starting talking to them and asking where they’re from and they said Hungary," Quinn explains to the ECHO. "We were joking around and they said they were better than Dominik, then he says, ‘I’m Dominik’s friend’ and I thought, ‘okay, yeah yeah’ then, as if on cue, he goes look and he’s calling him.

"I look at his phone and it had his name, it was FaceTime then he come on the screen and I lost it. I turned my camera on just in case, I said to Darlene (sitting in the front), it’s him!

"She couldn’t see and they were just talking, he was asking if they got to game yet, he said hi but caught us in the moment of just losing it, it was just so unlikely.

"We got talking to his friend (Kovacs Levente) that he was on the phone to, they used to play together and he said he was having rehab for his knee, he had torn his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament).

"He said Dominik is a great guy, when he was in the hospital, he came and visited him when he was recovering. This was only in the last couple of months, he’s showed the picture where he’s laid out in the hospital and Dominik came to spend time with him.

"He said that’s who he is, he’d already moved on to higher levels than his friend but still supporting him, checking in on him, they said he was just a loyal, great guy."

Curran was speaking to the ECHO from Innsbruck as both he and his wife hope to catch a flight to Liverpool for their clash with West Ham United on Sunday. While 'everything is crossed' to return to the magic of Anfield, failing that they will catch the action against the Hammers from Lausanne, Switzerland.

The American moved to clear up confusion over a video that emerged in the aftermath of the win over LASK. As Szoboszlai and the Liverpool players showed their appreciation for the travelling fans, the 22-year-old can be seen making gestures towards the Austrian section of supporters.

However, Curran says after speaking to the Hungarian's friends that he was having dialogue with them and his father who were in that part of the ground.

"Apparently there was video circulating around that was wondering about what he (Szoboszlai) was gesturing to the fans, wondering if he was wondering to the LASK supporters," he added. "These guys, I’ve been speaking to them today, Kovacs and Peter and he was said he talking to us and his dad who was sitting next to them and communicating what they were doing after the game.

"That’s all that was, in Hungary they misunderstood and thought he was signalling animosity but he was just communicating to Kovacs and Peter."
