James McCarthy gets Celtic fans asking the same question as team photo comes with glaring omission

The experienced midfielder hasn't been spotted recently in Celtic plans.

James McCarthy isn't getting a Celtic look-in under Brendan Rodgers - and that appears to have stretched to the team photo.

The former Crystal Palace midfielder joined the Hoops in Ange Postecoglou's first season on a lengthy four-year deal, but with two years remaining on it, he's out in the Parkhead cold. Albian Ajeti and Ismailia Soro were among those who got off the Premiership fringes for pastures new over the summer but McCarthy didn't get a move and remains contracted.

Still listed as the club's number 16 on the Celtic website, he was snapped in training during July but in the official club photo, the 32-year-old is not involved. That has fans asking what the situation is with McCarthy, one saying "James McCarthy one of our highest earners sat at home watching Top Boy, fair play to him." Another added "Cracking player! When did we sign him?" with a punter exclaiming "They forgot to invite James McCarthy."

One had a defence for the midfielder, explaining "James McCarthy is living the dream and you are all just haters. Gets thousands of pounds a week, to do nothing but watch Celtic." Another punter had an interesting theory, asking "Did McCarthy take the photo?"

Rodgers said in August of McCarthy's situation: “It’s a real shame for James because growing up he was obviously a Celtic supporter. I saw him a lot in the Premier League.

"He was a fantastic talent. He’s a great guy but sadly a few injuries and niggles have curtailed his time here so he will be looking to move on.”
