How Benni McCarthy has helped Jonny Evans at Manchester United

Jonny Evans has thanked Benni McCarthy for his advice in front of goal ever since he returned to Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

The 35-year-old has emerged as an unlikely scoring threat for United so far this season, seeing a goal disallowed in a victory over Burnley and coming close to a headed goal against Crystal Palace a week ago.

Evans only netted seven goals in 198 appearances during his first spell at the club, but could quite easily have scored two in his three competitive appearances since returning.

While he was signed to provide defensive cover, his attacking threat from set-pieces has been a valuable addition to the side, and the Northern Ireland international has United coach McCarthy to thank for that.

"I suppose I have to give credit to Benni [McCarthy]," he told MUTV. "Over pre-season when I wasn't able to join in because of numbers, we'd do finishing sessions with Benni McCarthy and a few younger lads. So I suppose I can give Benni a bit of credit!

"I was gutted the other night with Sam [Johnstone] making the save, and I said to him straight after the game that he probably wasn't aware at the time that it was my header he saved, but for me, scoring at the Stretford End would have been something to top off."
