Celtic hero John Hartson trolls Rangers after defeat to Aris Limassol in Europa League

FORMER Celtic striker John Hartson could not resist a dig at old foes Rangers after the Ibrox side’s shock defeat to Aris Limassol in the Europa League.

The Light Blues went down 2-1 away to the Cypriot side in their second match in group C.

The team was taken for the first time by midfielder and current interim manger Steven Davis who replaced the sacked Michael Beale.

And the Northern Irishman got his unlikely managerial career off to the worst possible start as he watched his side succumb to defeat.

Goals either side of half-time from Alex Moucketou-Moussounda and Shavy Babicka put the hosts into a shock two-goal lead.

Abdallah Sima‘s header with twenty minutes to go sparked some hope for the visitors, but they could not complete the comeback.

While Gers fans have been left furious with the result, the final score certainly pleased Hoops favourite Hartson who rubbed it in after the final whistle.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the Welshman, who scored just under 100 goals for the Celts, congratulated the Cypriots on their first win in the competition on home soil.

He wrote: “Great win Limassol… 1st win ever in the group stages.”

The thinly-veiled dig was accompanied by two clapping emojis.

Meanwhile ex-Rangers striker Kris Boyd was not happy with his old side’s performance on the continent.

While reporting on the game for Sky Sports News, Boyd named himself and another Ibrox veteran as better alternatives for Davis’ selection for the weekend’s trip to St Mirren.

He said: “They (Limassol) deserve it – Rangers have been absolutely woeful tonight.

“I said it before they struggle to put five passes together.

“If I was Steven Davis, at the weekend going on this [performance] I’d pick myself and Alex Rae to go into the middle of that pitch.

“They have been all over the place.”

The Light Blues take on Stephen Robinson‘s in-form Buddies on Sunday at the SMISA Stadium.
