Tim Ream praised for going ‘above and beyond’ during Chris Basham’s horror leg break

Tim Ream’s reaction to Chris Basham’s horror leg break has earned him plenty of plaudits.

Fulham’s 3-1 win over Sheffield United was halted in disturbing circumstances when Basham’s leg gave way, with a bone clearly snapped.

The 35-year-old defender was administered oxygen on pitch, and later taken to hospital in an ambulance.

With him throughout the whole terrifying ordeal was opposition defender Ream, who was first on the scene to comfort the stricken Basham.

Ream was seen holding onto Basham while waiting for the medical staff to arrive, and he stayed with him whilst treatment was being administered, and after.

Basham seemingly retained consciousness throughout the entire ordeal, despite what would have been searing pain.

American defender Ream is just a year older at 36, and having seen plenty in a long and storied career, he surely knew how badly afflicted his fellow defender was.

His desire to stay by Basham has certainly earned him a place in Blades fans’ hearts, with a number commenting on the impressive scenes.

“Tim Ream going above & beyond in this moment,” one Sheffield United fan wrote on Twitter. “Whilst others looked away (understandably), he stayed with Bash for what must’ve seemed like a lifetime.”

Another added: “A touch of class from Tim Ream, the closest to Bash when he went down and stayed with him until, and after, medical attention arrived. Hope he gets some recognition from the fans when #ffc come to Bramall Lane.”

A third summed up the mood, saying: “Taken the injury out because it’s genuinely horrific but look at Ream. Comforting him as he’s lying there, that is a proper top notch bloke.”

Updating talkSPORT on the extent of the injury post match, Blades manager Paul Heckingbottom said: "[It’s a] horrendous injury.

“He’s where he needs to be which is in the hospital with the correct people.

“It’s something where…no one wants to see that or that type of injury in any sport, so we’re thinking of him at the minute, definitely.”

He added: “I went over to see him and I knew before I went what I was going to see, but he’s such a big character for us.

“It’s his testimonial year. Everyone sees him as someone who leads the group and sets standards and so everybody felt it in that moment, without a doubt.

“It wasn’t just us on the pitch either, it was the fans as well so of course it affects us.”
