Eddie Howe asked about Nick Pope moments in Newcastle United's 2-2 draw at West Ham

Newcastle United could not hold on to the lead at the London Stadium

Eddie Howe pointed to Nick Pope's injury time save at West Ham when asked about the Newcastle United stopper's part in the opening goal at the London Stadium.

Pope rushed out after a defensive mix-up before Tomas Soucek was allowed to tap home to put the Hammers 1-0 up. After the game, players spoke of taking collective responsibility as Newcastle blew a 2-1 lead to hand the Hammers a point.

When asked about Pope's moment, Howe said after the 2-2 draw: "I prefer to focus on the save at the end. It has got us a point really. "Nick has been magnificent in recent weeks and he has certainly played his part in our run of clean sheets.

"I think there's disappointment late in the game but maybe, when the dust settles, we'll look at it differently. It depends on the next results for us."

Howe said he felt frustrated at the manner of how the match panned out as Mohammed Kudus swept home an 89th minute. Howe said: "A frustrating game for us. "It was a probably a hangover from midweek.

"A really good response in the second half but we're frustrated not to get over the line. "I think we did really well in the second half, showed great character to come back. We took control of the game, caused problems, created chances."

Yet Newcastle could and perhaps should have won it when Alexander Isak waltzed through and slammed a hat-trick chance against the post.

Howe said: "[Alexander] Isak's hat-trick opportunity was probably the defining moment. "He's an outstanding player, the first in particular is an outstanding finish. He is unlucky not to score the third but they are the small margins."
