The Manchester United legend is now a free agent after MLS side DC United announced his departure on Saturday.

Rooney took charge at the club in July 2022, with the decision for him to leave one that was 'mutual' between both parties.

However, he could be set to make a return to management very soon, with Birmingham a potential destination.

Their American owners, with NFL legend Tom Brady a recent investor, are known to be admirers of Rooney and have so far been reluctant to give manager John Eustace a new contract.

Birmingham currently sit sixth in the Championship after 11 games and ten points off the automatic promotion spots.

Such a move for Rooney would see him make a comeback to the dugout in English football after his spell at Derby County.

He initially joined the Rams as a player in 2020 before becoming their interim boss, and then permanent manager a year later.

Rooney resigned from his role in 2022 and joined DC United just weeks later, returning to the club after starring as a player.

Despite a 2-0 win over New York City FC on Saturday, they missed out on the play-offs for the fourth consecutive year.

Speaking on his departure, he said: "It's the right time. I've done everything I can to get this club into the playoffs. It's not a single thing that's happened. It's about timing.

"What lies ahead, I don't know. I've seen a lot of reports in the media. I'm going back with nothing lined up."
