Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna lauded Manchester United loanee Brandon Williams for his performance at the weekend, but he also stated the defender has the potential to improve with the best years of his career ahead of him.

Erik ten Hag made it clear Williams was surplus to requirements at United and he joined Ipswich on a season-long loan in August thanks to his pre-existing relationship with McKenna from his time at Old Trafford.

McKenna, whose playing career was unfortunately cut short age just 22 due to injury, has always been highly regarded in the coaching sphere and he joined United from Tottenham in 2016 to take charge of the Under-18s.

He eventually progressed to the first-team staff under Jose Mourinho and he continued on the coaching staff after the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

McKenna followed Solskjaer out the door when the Norwegian was sacked and he took his first job in management with Ipswich. He won promotion to the Championship last season and his side are now in second position in the division.

Ipswich won again on Saturday afternoon and Williams scored his first goal for the club in that game since signing on loan.

McKenna was asked about Williams and said: “It was a good performance, he’s getting stronger game by game. Getting back into good habits as a football player and as a defender on and off the ball

“He’s getting back towards the levels that I know he’s capable of, but I think more importantly it’s about pushing him past those levels because he’s young and hopefully he’s got some good years in his career and big moments ahead of him.

"It’s about getting back to doing all the right things. He’s been a really good contributor this last month with his performances on both sides of the pitch with the versatility he brings to the squad.

"I think it’s clear to see the aggression and the positivity in his game on and off the ball that supporters can really get behind and that will endear you to teammates as well.

“We’re happy to have him here, he knows he’s got a lot of work still to do but I think it’s been a few weeks that he’ll take a lot of confidence from to continue working hard next week.”

Williams' contract at United expires in 2024 and there's an option of another year.
