Matt Doherty sends one word Alan Shearer response after Ollie Watkins and Aston Villa claim

Latest Aston Villa news as Wolves defender Matt Doherty talks about whether he should have conceded a penalty for his foul on Ollie Watkins at Molineux

Wolves defender Matt Doherty says his foul on Ollie Watkins should "never" have been a penalty.

Doherty pushed Watkins in the back when he was through on goal at 1-1, putting the Aston Villa striker off and causing him to fire wide. There have been widespread claims that Watkins and Villa should have been awarded a penalty, but the match officials disagreed.

Now Doherty himself has weighed in on the incident. Replying to a post on X (formerly Twitter), suggesting Villa should have had a spot kick, the former Tottenham man replied: "Never."

Speaking about the incident on BBC Match of the Day 2 over the weekend, legendary striker Alan Shearer made his stance on the incident clear. "If he doesn't shove him, he's getting a clear shot at goal," he said.

"Clearly he shoves him, enough for him to be off balance there. That's why he misses the target as he does. For me, that should have been a penalty."

On Watkins' overall performance, he added: "It highlights how important he is to Aston Villa. "He's enjoying his football, obviously, hence he's signed his new contract. He's playing really, really well."
