An England fan was left scratching his head at Elland Road after being handed a Euro 96 cup - 23 years after the tournament ended.

Leeds supporter Tomo Lane raced to social media back in 2019 after club staff reached under the counter to give him a cup, as he realised that it had the branding of the tournament that took place almost two decades earlier.

Elland Road hosted three Spain fixtures during the tournament including their draws with Bulgaria and France as well as their win over Romania, with an average of 30,000 fans in attendance. Although the stadium hasn't been chosen to host in 2028, memorabilia may still remain.

Tom said at the time of his discovery: "When you ask the Elland Road bar staff for a spare cup and they give you one from Euro 96. Where’s that been hiding 23 years."

One fan joked: "I hope you’ve kept it. Worth a fortune I'd bet. Well a pound at least." A rival chuckled: "Well you know that it being Leeds, they’ll have taken more!"

A Leeds fan laughed: "Wish Leeds stayed in a cup as long as this cup has stayed in Leeds."
