It's rare that footballers get in better shape following their retirement, but Fernando Torres continues to bolster his reputation as a bionic man after hanging up his boots

Former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Fernando Torres could be Earth's last line of defence should the Decepticons ever come knocking.

That's after fans suggested the 2010 World Cup-winner could 'beat up a transformer' following his appearance in a new car advert. The Spanish beefcake was enlisted to promote the new Ssangyong Torres, a line of cars sold by the South Korean manufacturer named after a certain Atletico Madrid product.

It's no secret the 39-year-old has piled on the pounds since hanging up his boots, as is common for many ex-pros in their retirement years. Except in Torres' case, he arguably looks better than he ever did during his career and more closely resembles a muscle machine.

And that was exactly the sentiment shared by some of the stud's Instagram followers after Torres posted a clip of his cameo. He shared the advert alongside the caption: "The new @ssangyonges TORRES has come to compete [for] my name. And [as for] the fact that there's only one Torres, we'll see. . ."

"Brilliant," exclaimed one loyal supporter in admiration of Fernando's physique. "Not trying to brag, but my legend would beat up even a transformer!"

The ad features Torres looking moody in a dimly lit setting before lights tilt up to show the star attraction running on a treadmill and even more moodiness. There's also a teasing shot of the tattooed tactician pulling a top on before displaying his ripped frame in a vest and shorts in front of Ssangyong's new creation.

It's anyone's guess as to what the link is between him and the brand's latest machine, but it's hard to argue with the logic. Engineering plus former Champions League-winner and two-time Euros champion equals sales.

Despite calling time on his playing career, Torres has maintained his pull as a sponsor in his native Spain. That's despite his work coaching Atletico's under-19 team for more than two years.

And there are plenty among his followers who want the academy graduate to take over from Diego Simeone once the Argentinian's days in Madrid are up. But for now, he'll remain on standby in case any unexpected visitors from Cybertron do happen to invade.
