Trent Alexander-Arnold has delivered a brutal response to James Maddison after the Tottenham playmaker poked fun at the Luis Diaz disallowed goal controversy.

The pair are together on England duty less than a fortnight after being part of one of the Premier League's biggest VAR controversies when Diaz’s goal against Spurs was wrongly ruled out due to a communications cock-up. Amid the fallout, Jurgen Klopp suggested the game, which Liverpool lost 2-1, should be replayed.

With the Reds still fuming at the decision, Maddison couldn’t resist a cheeky joke at Alexander-Arnold’s expense. Maddison uploaded a picture to his Instagram stories showing him and the right-back together in the gym, with the post caption reading “still asking for a replay” alongside several snoring and laughing emojis.

However, Alexander-Arnold has hit back with a jibe of his own. During an interview ahead of tonight’s friendly with Australia, he was asked about Maddison’s replay comment.

He told Channel 4: “Nah. No, he was asking me how to teach him how to put a free-kick in the top corner. But, I told him I'd just show him the video of when I scored at Leicester last year and they got relegated, so..." Alexander-Arnold ended the answer laughing with a broad smile on his face.

The goal he was referring to was the stunning strike which put Liverpool 3-0 up at the King Power Stadium, pushing Leicester closer to the relegation trapdoor. Maddison would go on to miss a crucial penalty against relegation rivals Everton as the Foxes crashed into the Championship just seven years after winning the Premier League.

Alexander-Arnold’s barb naturally went down well with Reds fans, with one lauding: “That smile at the end!” A second declared: “The instant smile from Trent on just the first word as he instantly knows the savagery that's coming.”

A third pointed out: “The laugh at the end is so good, he literally can't contain himself because he knows what he's about to say.” Another said: “Great answer Trent.”
