'Me?' Gareth Southgate name check on Jamaal Lascelles' England chances surprised Newcastle skipper

Newcastle United skipper Jamaal Lascelles has not represented his country since his days in the Under-21s but is he wildcard option for Euro 2024?

Jamaal Lascelles says that Newcastle United players can take encouragement from Gareth Southgate's mentions in recent England Press conferences.

Lascelles himself was name-checked before the last squad was announced for games against Australia and Italy. But Lascelles feels that Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff and Anthony Gordon are playing well enough for international recognition.

Lascelles told Chronicle Live: "Players like Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff as a number eight, with England playing 4-3-3 and Anthony Gordon.

"Gordon for me has to. For me, he is phenomenal. It's up to the manager. We can talk about it but it's really up to him."

Southgate indicated that Lascelles was still in the FA's national pool after playing for England from Under-16 to Under-21 level. The mention from Southgate was met by surprise from the Newcastle skipper: "Me? I didn't know that. I didn't realise he mentioned me. That's good news and good to hear."

Southgate, speaking about Newcastle players and Lascelles, had said: "There are some fabulous stories (at Newcastle). Jamaal Lascelles was with us in the Under-21s and has been a fantastic leader for Newcastle.

"He has had to be fantastically patient waiting for his chance. There are those sorts of stories all over the pitch."

Southgate is also expected to keep tabs on Elliot Anderson in the coming weeks. Southgate had said: "We like Elliot. We think he's a very good player.

"He's got high potential. He's obviously at a club that are absolutely flying so we will just have to wait and see. We're very much respectful that if he needs time to think that through, we completely understand."
