Newcastle United's 'ruthless' mentality summed up perfectly by Sean Longstaff in honest interview

Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff grabbed his third of the season with a well taken strike to seal the game before half-time

Newcastle United star Sean Longstaff says that there is still plenty of room for improvement for the Magpies despite a rousing 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.

The midfielder took his tally of goals to three for the season with a well-taken strike past England keeper Sam Johnstone at the Gallowgate End and had praise for his team-mates after the no-nonsense performance. Yet Longstaff was more interested in what happens in Newcastle's next game against Borussia Dortmund rather than basking in the glory after this ruthless display.

Longstaff told Chronicle Live: "We have set the tone. But it is probably going to need to be better though.

"Especially from the second half on Saturday against Crystal Palace. But it is another European night under the lights and it will be rocking. "We just can't wait."

Longstaff also feels that Newcastle are not yet close to firing on all cylinders dispute their eight match unbeaten run. The academy product said: "Definitely not. We still have Joe Willock to come back and Sven Botman and others aren't far away. We just need to get back to full strength and then when happens you will hopefully see the best of us."

The first half proved to be one of the passages of play of the season so far from Newcastle though. Longstaff added: "I thought it was a good day. Coming off the back of an international break you never know how it is going to go.

"But I thought the first half we blew them away really. We scored some really good goals, could have had a few more but a really good day."

Longstaff has already levelled his goal tally in all competitions from last season in all competitions and is on course for a personal best return. He is more than capable of getting double figures in this team.

After the euphoria of that goal against PSG, the Geordie midfielder reflected on his latest strike and said: "I had a bit of time which is great. You don't always get that in and around the box in the Premier League.

"It was a great day all round though. We had Callum Wilson back and Jacob Murphy was excellent and Anthony Gordon had a great game too."
