Aitor Karanka admits he was surprised to see Birmingham City sack John Eustace following the progress he had made with the club.

The former Blues boss spoke about the managerial change after Wayne Rooney was appointed in the hotseat. The latter has had a difficult start after two defeats in as many games in charge.

Rooney has already come under fire for trying to impose his style of play on the team too quickly. While Karanka believes the Manchester United legend will succeed at St Andrew's, he told talkSPORT: "I wasn't surprised they appointed Rooney, my surprise was they changed the coach because I think he was doing a good job.

"Sometimes it's understandable when a club changes the manager, I was there during the pandemic which was even worse for me but I thought they found the right man [in Eustace] to do the job but they changed it.

"So this is my surprise, not about Rooney because I met him when I was there and he was at Derby. But for sure, he will do a good job."
