Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has been hailed by supporters for his message to the family of Gian Piero Ventrone, Spurs' former athletic trainer that died just over a year ago.

The 62-year-old had joined the club in November 2021 as part of Antonio Conte’s backroom staff, with the trainer having previously held roles at Catania, JS Suning, GZ Evergrande, AC Ajaccio and Juventus where he first met the then-Spurs manager.

There wasn't a dry eye in the Amex Stadium when the club held a minute's silence for the former member of their coaching staff, who died suddenly from acute leukaemia just two days after his diagnosis. Following the 1-0 win, Harry Kane dedicated his winning goal to Ventrone, saying in an emotional post-match interview: "It's been a difficult week to say the least, and it was nice to get a win today.

"Yeah for sure [the goal was for him]. It was a bit of a scrappy goal, obviously Sonny has just whipped one in with a load of pace.

"And yeah when you're feeling good it just kind of comes off you and goes in and that was the case. I'm really proud of the boys today, it's been a tough week and to come here away from home, a really difficult place to come.

"[We] didn't play as well as we know we can but we dug deep when we needed to, and a great clean sheet from the boys, and a really important win."

In a post to his Instagram account, Ventrone's son Ivan shared a photo of the shirt Son had sent the family. A message on the back was written by the player himself and read: "To Gian Piero!

"I hope you will be proud of me! I miss you and thank you for thinking [of me] like a son. Love you Gian Piero!"

The post was shared on the Tottenham subreddit, with fans highlighting how lovely the gesture was. One wrote: "This made me properly emotional. You could tell Sonny was really close to him with the the way they interacted with one another."

Another said: "This made me proper tear up. Forever in our memories, Gian Piero," while another wrote: "Absolute class. Making Sonny captain was the best decision Ange made upon taking over. He should have been made captain years ago."
