A fan group for Major League Soccer side Portland Timbers have raised concerns about the franchise potentially appointing Phil Neville as their manager due to a 'history of sexist public statements'.

The former Manchester United and England defender has been tipped to fill the Portland vacancy having been sacked by Inter Miami last season. Neville, 46, managed England Women between 2018 and 2021 and he's currently working as an assistant coach for the Canada men's national team.

Neville apologised in 2018 when he was appointed by England Women in response to controversial, historic social media posts the ex-Premier League man made about women. Speaking then, Bury-born Neville said his comments "were not a true reflection of my character or beliefs".

However, concerns have been raised by the Timbers Army supporters' club over his proposed appointment. The former United player is thought to be a frontrunner for the vacant Portland job.

A statement from the supporters' group read: "The Portland Timbers are currently rebuilding a team on the pitch in addition to their ongoing efforts to rebuild trust with their fans and the community.

"We are deeply disappointed that the club has reportedly settled on a finalist for the head coach who has a history of sexist public statements that run counter to our ethos as a club, city and supporters' group, and who also lacks a proven track record as a manager. We urge the Timbers to reconsider this hire and re-evaluate other candidates before finalising a contract."

As a player, Neville made 381 appearances for United after progressing through the club's Academy system. He also represented Everton and won 59 caps for England.

After managing England Women for three years, Neville was appointed by Inter Miami in 2021 and he took charge of 90 matches before his sacking in June this year. He made an instant return to coaching when he was appointed by the Canadian national team as an assistant manager this summer.
