Jamaal Lascelles 'fuming' after unseen Arsenal spat with Jorginho as Newcastle turn it "nasty"

Newcastle United skipper Jamaal Lascelles wasn't happy with the unsporting behavior of Jorginho

Newcastle United skipper Jamaal Lascelles has revealed he was left "fuming" after Arsenal skipper Jorginho snubbed a post-game handshake with him after the Magpies' 1-0 win at St James' Park. On a day when tempers flared and Kai Havertz was fortunate to stay on the field for a late lunge on Sean Longstaff, the London side were then triggered in the second half when Anthony Gordon's goal stood after the play appeared to roll out of play.

But the moment was enough to leave Newcastle overjoyed and the Gunners left to rue their first defeat of the campaign in the Premier League.

When asked if the narrow win was a sweet one, Lascelles told reporters: "Yeah, and especially how they go on as well. I’m just so glad that we beat them.

"Their captain, Jorginho, didn’t want to shake my hand after the game. For me, whatever happens on the pitch you show sportsmanship and shake hands afterwards.

"He didn’t do that, so I’m so glad we beat them. Players like that, I don’t think it’s acceptable.

"A lot of them walked in but I went up to him to shake his hand but he didn’t want to - and he’s their captain!

"I was fuming, it’s not on. I would never refuse to shake an opposition captain’s hand, no way. You can have as many arguments as you want on the pitch but shake hands at the end, it’s part of the sport."

Newcastle put themselves back in touch with the top four in the Premier League ahead of with two more heavyweight battles coming up on Tyneside against Chelsea and Manchester United. When asked if he revelled in such battle, Lascelles said: "I love them, I absolutely love them. We really rose to the challenge and the battle.

"Joelinton was getting stuck in, Callum Wilson was loving it up front. We’ve got players in our team who like that battle and we fancied ourselves if it was that sort of game."

Lascelles, who put in a sparkling defensive display, said the gauntlet has been thrown down to the top sides after the big win. He said: "Yeah, definitely. We made it that way today. We were a little bit nasty at times but we won and we’re over the moon.

"They (big teams) always found it difficult to play here because of the fans but now we’ve got the quality, with the fans, it’s a really tough place to come, and teams know that."

Newcastle jet out to Germany to face Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night, and Lascelles says there is no fear in the camp. He said: "When you’ve got momentum, beating Man United and Arsenal and we just get ready and go again. We’ve got a good squad with good quality."
