A bizarre clash between wind-up merchants Diego Costa and Gary Medel has left fans salivating.

Former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea forward Costa and ex-Inter Milan and Cardiff enforcer Medel are now rivals in the Brazilian top flight. Costa plays for Botafogo, who currently top the table, while Medel is with Vasco de Gama, with the sides meeting in a feisty encounter on Monday.

Naturally, the pair were in the thick of the action. At one stage in the second half, Costa confronted the referee over a decision, prompting Medel to get involved.

Costa then took umbrage to Medel sticking his nose in, briefly squaring up to the Chile international, who then broke away from the spat holding his nose, seemingly to suggest there was a pongy scent coming from his foe. To underline the point, he then theatrically flapped his hand in front of his nose.

The incident was lauded by fans, with one declaring: “Brazilian league be cinema.” Another quipped: “Two mad men.” A third added: “Gary Medel is so funny, bro. Always in a fight. He finally met his match, and all he does is mock him?” Another declared: “This is a generational fight.”

Medel was celebrating later as lowly Vasco secured a 1-0 win thanks to Paulo’s first half goal. Costa is renowned for his hothead behaviour over the years, including one occasion where he called a referee’s mother a w*****. The 35-year-old was in the midst of the feisty Atletico Madrid and Barcelona encounter when he unleashed the taunt – and his words towards the official saw him disciplined by the Spanish Football Federation.

Referee Jesus Gil Manzano’s post-match report read: “In the 28th minute, number 19 … Diego Costa was sent off for the following reason: saying to me loudly, in the following terms: ‘I s**t on your w**** mother, I s**t on your w**** mother!’”
