Liverpool lost 3-2 to Toulouse in a chaotic night in France.

Aron Dunnum opened the scoring for the hosts after a poor first half performance from a Liverpool side with nine changes to the starting line-up that drew at Luton. Jurgen Klopp made three changes at half-time with Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai brought on, but Toulouse would score again through Thijs Dallinga.

Liverpool pulled out back after a bizarre own-goal from Christian Casseres but Toulouse responded immediately with a strike from Niklas Schmidt. Diogo Jota made it 3-2 and Jarell Quansah thought he'd equalised in the final minute before a long VAR check saw the goal ruled out. Here's how Ian Doyle rated the players.

Caoimhin Kelleher 6

Confident with the ball at his feet and passed well first half, and not much chance with any of the goals.

Joe Gomez 6

So close with glancing header that struck crossbar and did well to cover one Toulouse break. Assisted Liverpool goal but tougher time when shifting to left-back second half.

Joel Matip 6

Regularly sauntered into the Toulouse half to help out the attack first half, but lost his way somewhat in patches after the break.

Jarell Quansah 7

Confident enough in possession and the challenge, and unlucky with opener deflecting in off him. Also unlucky to have dramatic late leveller chalked off for an earlier handball.

Kostas Tsimikas 4

Very poor when dispossessed for the opener and unable to offer much going forward. Subbed.

Wataru Endo 5

Not afraid to put his boot in but a little careless in picking up a booking before break and at times bypassed. Subbed.

Harvey Elliott 7

Busy and sought to get Liverpool going from the right of midfield, and showed the right attitude as his team-mates slumped second half.

Alexis Mac Allister 6

More comfortable when freed of number six responsibilities and caught the eye with some swift, accurate passing. Had to revert to defensive midfield second half with mixed results, but assisted Jota strike.

Ben Doak 6

A couple of trademark barging runs first half and one shot parried by Restes. Subbed.

Cody Gakpo 5

Unhappy with lack of protection from referee at times but struggled to make meaningful impact and almost invisible second half. Subbed.

Luis Diaz 6

Began strongly despite being on the receiving end of some foul play and a threat first half, but faded a bit after break. Subbed.

Mohamed Salah (for Doak 46) 5

Took a bang to the head shortly after coming on and didn’t contribute much.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (for Tsimikas 46) 6

Sought to at least inject some tempo into Liverpool’s play.

Dominik Szoboszlai (for Endo 46) 5

Not the cameo the Hungarian was looking for.

Darwin Nunez (for Gakpo 73) 5

Ran around a bit.

Diogo Jota (for Diaz 81)

Took his consolation goal very well.
