George Hall made his long-awaited return to action on Sunday with a brief outing for Birmingham City’s second string.

The 19-year-old has been missing from Blues’ first team for 10 weeks due to a hamstring injury and didn’t make the squad against Sunderland despite travelling up with the team. Manager Wayne Rooney is erring on the side of caution with Hall, who has only made two first team appearances in seven months due to three separate hamstring issues.

Whilst up in the north east, Hall was given a run-out during the under-21s’ 2-0 win over Middlesbrough in the Premier League Cup. Hall came on as a second half substitute in the match to play some much-needed minutes.

Marcel Oakley started the game after coming on as a substitute in Blues’ 3-1 defeat to Sunderland 24 hours earlier. Brandon Khela, who was an unused substitute at the Stadium of Light, also played 90 minutes.

Junior Dixon and 16-year-old Romelle Donovan grabbed the goals in another convincing win for Steve Spooner’s side. Blues’ U21s have now won their last four games without conceding a goal.

Donovan - who made his first team debut against Hull City recently - now has four goals to his name this season. More first team opportunities could be around the corner for the attacking ace.
