Jonny Evans names who he admires most in Manchester United squad and lists their two qualities

The Man United hero says there is one player who has impressed him since his return to Old Trafford.

Jonny Evans says he most admires Rasmus Hojlund in the current Manchester United squad, having been impressed with his attitude and effort.

The pair, separated in age by 15 years, both arrived at Old Trafford this summer, with Evans returning to his boyhood club eight years after his initial exit. Both have played important roles so far under Erik ten Hag, albeit the season has not gone as planned so far.

Evans, 35, was brought in as an emergency back-up but due to injuries has already played eight games, having started four straight Premier League matches prior to his hamstring injury ahead of Luton Town.

Hojlund meanwhile leads the club scorers chart with five goals, although the 20-year-old is yet to score in nine Premier League matches. All of his strikes so far have come in Champions League defeats.

Evans, like many supporters, has been impressed with Hojlund’s overall start at United. In a fans' Q&A with club media, he was asked who he admired most in the current Reds squad.

He replied: “I’d probably say Hojlund. I think, for such a young lad, to have his attributes and his personality to be able to come in and, you know, his work-rate too. I think the fans have really taken to him already and he’s going to become a top player.”

Evans has managed to grab an assist in his eight outings, teeing up Bruno Fernandes’ winner in September’s triumph over Burnley with a long, raking ball. The Northern Irishman was asked whether this was a skill he had to hone.

“I think, for me, it’s probably something I probably did have to work on,” Evans said. “I probably would say my longer passing was something that I was quite aware that I wanted to practise on quite a lot.

“And, you know, throughout the years, I’ve tried to work on that, with both feet. Like I said earlier, I think for a lot of centre-backs now and you’ve got be able to play with both feet with different ranges of passing.

“Yeah, long-range patterns are something that I’d say I worked on a lot. So when something like that comes off for an assist, for a goal, you do think ‘oh, all that hard work has paid off’.”
