ENGLAND 2-0 MALTA - REPORT
An underwhelming England laboured to a 2-0 victory over Malta in European Championship qualifying in their final game at Wembley this year.
It took the hosts just eight minutes to take the lead, although they got a large slice of luck as Enrico Pepe deflected Phil Foden’s cross into his own net.
That was one of only a handful of bright moments for Gareth Southgate’s side in the first half, as they headed to the break having had fewer shots than their opponents.
In fact, it took until the 64th minute for either team to register an effort on target, that coming when Trent Alexander-Arnold saw a bouncing strike saved.
England finally started going through the gears late on when Harry Kane converted from Bukayo Saka’s pass, before substitute Declan Rice had a delightful strike ruled out little more than 90 seconds later.

HOW THE GROUP NOW LOOKS
England extend their lead at the top of Group C, picking up 19 of an available 21 points. Italy have moved into second with 13, though they're only narrowly above Ukraine, who have the same number of points

ITALY DO THE BUSINESS
Here's the other game in the group that we've been following tonight. Italy's win sets up a corker of a clash with Ukraine

THE PUNTERS DIDN'T ENJOY IT
Fair to say that the social media supporters aren't happy, though

FAIR PLAY TO MALTA
They came to Wembley with a game plan and executed it pretty well. If it wasn't for the own goal eight minutes in, who knows how this game would have gone. Either way, they frustrated England by getting men back, crowding the penalty area and keeping shooting chances down to a minimum

FULL-TIME: ENGLAND 2-0 MALTA
Well, fair to say that was nothing special. Laboured and underwhelming for England, as they pick up a 2-0 victory that won't live long in the memory

BOTH TEAMS RUNNING THE CLOCK DOWN
I would suggest that, at this stage, both teams are happy with 2-0 here. Malta have just had the ball for nigh on a minute, but shown little interest in getting forward with it

SIX MINUTES ADDED ON
Let me tell you, certain members of the crowd are not happy at the long being added on

A fizzing effort from distance which the 'keeper awkwardly saves as the ball moves in front of him

AFTER THAT DRAMA
Can England finish strongly? Even 2-0 isn't as emphatic a scoreline as they're expected to win by

GOAL RULED OUT
Wait a minute - it's not going to stand! There's an offside given. Somebody was standing beyond the defence when Rice struck the shot, that somebody being Harry Kane, and he's judged to have been interfering with play

GOAL! ENGLAND 3-0 MALTA (Declan Rice)
The floodgates have opened! Rice grabs his fourth England goal by driving into space from Alexander-Arnold's pass, and with nobody bothering to tackle him, he decides to have a shot and curls into the far corner

GOAL! ENGLAND 2-0 MALTA (Harry Kane)
At last! Fast, incisive football and it results in a goal. The build-up play was lovely, involving Alexander-Arnold, Walker, Foden and Saka, the latter of whom pulls the ball across to Kane, who fires into an empty net.

ENGLAND NEED TO UP THE TEMPO
This has been so poor from England. There's no oomph in this performance whatsoever. They must move the ball quicker to try and get around that deep Malta defence

CROWD GETTING BORED?
Some of them certainly are. A paper airplane has just flown from the stands and made it on the pitch
