Non-league FC United of Manchester have been left fuming after a new signing performed a U-turn – hours after being interviewed in full club gear.

FC United, the club formed by disenchanted Manchester United fans following the Glazers’ takeover in the mid-2000s, confirmed the signing of experienced striker Bobby Grant on Friday. The 33-year-old played in the EFL and National League for the likes of Wrexham, Rochdale, Scunthorpe and Fleetwood.

The Rebels, of the Northern Premier League, announced on X (formerly Twitter): “We're delighted to announce that we've signed a striker who brings a top pedigree and a proven track record in the NPL. He's in contention for tomorrow's squad v Guiseley so get yourself to that football ground - Saturday 3pm.”

The post included a two-minute interview with Grant, who was wearing his new club’s tracksuit. Grant said: “I was player-manager at Radcliffe last year but things change in football.”

They certainly do, as without hours of that statement, FC United were posting again to announce Grant had performed a dramatic U-turn and decided to sign for another club.

They said: “Bobby Grant contacted the club last night to state that he's decided to sign for another club after receiving a more attractive offer yesterday evening.”

FC went on to beat Guiseley 3-2 thanks to a late penalty. After the game, a fans' account, @CommitteeFCUM, took aim at Grant, posting: “So, Bobby Grant decided to humiliate the club by doing an interview in full FC clobber before ditching us for a better offer. That ‘better offer’ involved playing 2 leagues lower in front of 68 fans, losing 4-3 (he didn't score). Meanwhile, FC won 3-2 in front of over 1,700. Oops.”

FC United themselves have made no further comment on the matter.

The club in question are Litherland REMYCA FC, who play in the North West Counties League Premier Division. As FC United were edging to victory over Guiseley, they were beaten at home by Chadderton in the second round of the Macron NWCFL League Cup.
