Ross McCausland to sign new Rangers contract as starlet swerves transfer interest with bumper long term deal

The Ibrox youngster is set for a new deal under Philippe Clement who has been impressed with his efforts.

Rangers will confirm Ross McCausland’s new long-term contract in the coming days.

Record Sport understands that broad terms over a new four-year deal have been agreed and there are just some minor details to be ironed out over the coming days. The Ibrox board made an extension their top priority and have been locked in talks with the new Northern Irish international and his representatives for the last 10 days. They are now close to an agreement which will see the talented 20-year-old rewarded with a strong first-team contract.

Rangers boss Philippe Clement admitted at his press conference yesterday that he had a “good feeling” over the talks. Clement confirmed: “We are talking with him and I have a good feeling around it, but it needs to be on paper first...I have no idea about that (other clubs keen). That's always something for the player and his agent.

“I’ve been very clear about Ross, I could have treated the situation in a different way, first let him sign a contract before letting him play or start.

“I didn't do that because I know how important Glasgow Rangers is for us. After his game against Livingston and a good performance, he got the international call.

“That's also because he started the game, so I think we're on the right way. I have total trust it's going to be positive.”

The 20-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, has attracted interest from English side Brentford and Italian sides Atalanta and Roma but his preference was always to remain with his boyhood heroes.

It has been a rapid rise for McCausland who had come through the Ibrox youth ranks after being signed from Linfield. He was part of Rangers B team but was then catapulted up to the first-team when fellow Northern Irishman Steven Davis was put in interim charge.

Since then McCausland’s career hasn’t looked back, as he has made his first start, his European debut and also made his bow for the full Northern Ireland side against Finland last week.
