Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery has named his starting XI to face Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon.

Emery has opted to make one change to the side which beat Fulham 3-1 before the November international break. In comes Diego Carlos in place of Youri Tielemans, while Jacob Ramsey returns to the bench and Nicolo Zaniolo misses out after returning to Villa injured after the international break.

Villa could leapfrog Tottenham in the Premier League table with a win, which would see them climb into the top four after two previous failed attempts after failing to beat Wolves last month and Nottingham Forest at the start of November. The club’s away form has been a cause for concern as only five teams in the division have lost more times on the road than Emery’s side, but Villa have an excellent, 100 per cent record at home.

Emery knows his team must improve their form on the road if they are to sustain a bid for a top five finish this season. This afternoon, Villa go in search of consecutive away league wins against Tottenham for the first time since August 1995.

From back to front, Emi Martinez starts in goal behind a defence of Ezri Konsa, Carlos and Pau Torres, while Matty Cash and Lucas Digne operate as full-backs. Boubacar Kamara and Douglas Luiz continue in the double pivot in midfield. John McGinn will support Moussa Diaby and Ollie Watkins in attack.

Villa XI vs Spurs: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Carlos, Pau, Digne, Kamara, Luiz, McGinn, Diaby, Watkins.

Subs: Olsen, Tielemans, Moreno, Lenglet, Duran, Bailey, Dendoncker, Ramsey, Iroegbunam.

Spurs XI vs Villa: Vicario, Porro, Royal, Davies, Udogie, Bentancur, Lo Celso, Gil, Son, Johnson, Kulusevski.

Subs: Forster, Austin, Skipp, Hojbjerg, Dier, Veliz, Donley, Dorrington.
