Former Everton captain Phil Jagielka has announced his retirement from professional football aged 41.

The defender, who made over 800 appearances across a 23-year career in the Premier League and Football League, spent 12 years at Everton either side of spells at boyhood club Sheffield United.

During his time on Merseyside, which included 385 appearances - as well as international recognition, Jagielka was appointed club captain by David Moyes after the retirement of Phil Neville in 2013.

After returning to Bramall Lane in 2019, the veteran defender later enjoyed spells with Derby County and Stoke City.
