Newcastle United skipper Jamaal Lascelles says that he would not have boarded the plane to Paris if he did not think the Magpies could win at Parc des Princes.

The skipper is relishing the opportunity to play in the Champions League after battling it out at places like Barnsley and Burton earlier in his Toon career. But now he must try to stop stars of the calibre of Kylian Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi in the French capital.

When asked if Newcastle could realistically take three points in the crunch Group F encounter, Lascelles told Chronicle Live: "100%. I think on our day we can beat anybody. If we're not confident as players there is no point turning up. We are very confident and we will take momentum."

Lascelles helped keep Mbappe quiet in the first game at St James' Park, but now the former Monaco star comes into the game on the back of a glut of goals for club and country. Yet Lascelles thinks United can stop him if they stick together.

The defender reflected: "He is a fantastic player. But I think we are a fantastic team.

"We showed that against Chelsea. Chelsea have fantastic individuals but we have a fantastic team. That is how we can win the game. We need to make the most of it and give our all."

The chronic injury crisis is hardly helping Newcastle at the moment but it did not prevent them picking up a big result against Chelsea.

Lascelles said: "It is a loss not having those players but we have to deal with it. We did it against Chelsea and we must adopt the same attitude in Paris. We are full of confidence and now we have momentum from Chelsea. Yes we have played them before and won.

"It will be a tough test and they are a fantastic team. But we are a tough group of lads and I am sure the gaffer will get the job done."
