Newcastle told where transfer priorities should lie as two Premier League stars tipped for move

Nick Pope was in sensational form against Paris Saint-Germain but there are calls for Newcastle United to sign a new goalkeeper

Darren Bent has urged Newcastle United to replace Nick Pope with a ball-playing goalkeeper next summer. The Toon shot-stopper was in fine form against Paris Saint-Germain, making several saves to thwart the Ligue 1 giants.

Nobody has made more Premier League clean sheets since the start of last season. Pope is regarded as one of the best in the division but question marks remain about his ability to play out from the back.

Former Sunderland striker Darren Bent suggested Newcastle should make signing a new goalie their top priority. He told talkSPORT: There’s a few positions they can be better at. I think goalkeeper, potentially.

“I like Nick Pope but there are question marks around the free kick (against Chelsea). Managers nowadays want goalkeepers who can play out with their feet - and that’s his weakness. I like him but they can find a better one.”

Bent also highlighted left-back and the right flank as other areas to improve. The 39-year-old named Jarrod Bowen and Crystal Palace talisman Michael Olise as two potential targets to dislodge Miguel Almiron.

“Left-back, again, I like Dan Burn but he’s not a left-back by trade,” he added. “You can find a better left-back. Livramento played there against Chelsea but he's better as a right-back.

“Right wing, Almiron. I like Almiron and he’s come back. People were making a mockery of him. But there are better right wingers out there, someone line an Olise at Palace. I know he’s just signed a new contract but who knows what can happen at the end of the season. He (Bowen) would be perfect. Then two are the first two (I think of).”
