Nick Pope injury puts Euro 2024 hopes in doubt as Newcastle suffer huge blow

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope will be ruled out for up to four months, talkSPORT understands.

The 31-year-old suffered a dislocated shoulder in his side's 1-0 victory against Manchester United on Saturday.

Pope dived at full stretch to prevent a volley from full-back Sergio Reguilon, which was blocked by Fabian Schar.

He was then replaced by backup and ex-Red Devils loanee Martin Dubravka on the 86 minutes.

Pope looks set to miss a significant chunk of the season and could return less than two months before England's Euro 2024 campaign begins.

The lengthy spell on the sidelines hinders his chances of England selection ahead of next summer's tournament in Germany.

The England international was, however, left out of the most recent Three Lions squad by manager Gareth Southgate.

It is a bigger blow for Newcastle as Eddie Howe's injury crisis only deepens.

He joins defender Sven Botman, striker Callum Wilson and midfield pair Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff on the treatment table.

Pope is understood to be seeing a specialist on Monday to get an understanding of the severity of his injury.

“That’s the disappointment on the night,” Howe said following his side's victory.

“Nick looks like he’s dislocated his shoulder. Such a strange thing, really, because he’d have made that dive thousands of times.

“It looks like maybe the arm has just kept on going, maybe on the moist floor, and his shoulder has come out of his joint. We’re going to have to seek specialist opinion and then see what happens, but it doesn’t look good.

“Too early to say (a timeframe). He was in pain when the shoulder was out of his joint. It’s gone back in now and he feels better but we’ll seek a specialist opinion. It doesn’t sound good.

Howe later added: “It’s a massive blow for us if Nick’s going to be out for a lengthy period of time.

“It looks really innocuous, they look the most serious ones at times. I think he’s dislocated his shoulder just diving, the arm kept going and looks like we could lose him.”
