Nathan Patterson's Everton absence has fans asking Sean Dyche 'what did he do?' as Scot is benched for veterans

It's a watching brief for Patterson again as Seamus Coleman and Ashley Young preferred for Newcastle clash.

Another game sat on the bench for Nathan Patterson has led to fans asking questions of Sean Dyche.

Everton are mired in a relegation battle after being deducted ten English Premier League points for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations, and another one could be on the way. The Goodison club have appealed, but for now, every point is crucial in their bid to beat the drop.

However, former Rangers starlet Patterson has been overlooked for tonight's game against Newcastle in favour of veteran Seamus Coleman. He also sat out the 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest, and has had to make do with brief cameos off the bench in Everton's three fixtures prior to that. Ahead of Coleman on the right is Ashley Young, whom at 38 makes the combined age on that side of the pitch a sprightly 73. Dyche has clearly gone for experience, but fans are wondering why given the two rare recent starts Patterson has been handed have resulted in Everton victories.

One posted: "Nathan Patterson essentially Everton's third choice RB right now. Humiliating for the poor lad," while another said: "Nathan Patterson needs to get out of there, now effectively 3rd choice RB."

Some are questioning what Dyche sees in Young and what makes him a better choice than the Scotland international. Another fan asked: "Genuinely what did Nathan Patterson do to Dyche to deserve this treatment?" Another chipped in: "I've spoke to hundreds of Rangers fans I have staying in work and they always ask about Nathan Patterson and rave about the lad, I honestly don't get how he doesn't start ahead of the walking disaster that is Ashley Young."
