DON'T BE RED-ICULOUS

SPFL rival jumps to defence of under-fire Barry Robson and says sack calls are ridiculous but ‘come with the territory’

He also warned his new winger he has a big month ahead of him

DEREK McINNES last night branded talk of Barry Robson facing the sack RIDICULOUS.

Aberdeen slumped second-bottom of the Premiership following their last-gasp defeat to Kilmarnock.

Robson’s side have won just once at Pittodrie all season and haven’t tasted victory in any competition for over a month.

But Killie boss McInnes, who was Dons gaffer for eight years, is adamant the rookie manager won’t be bulleted any time soon.

He said: “Barry has done a good job. He is in good hands at Aberdeen and he will be absolutely fine.

“We’ve already seen four managers lose their jobs this season. For me, it’s ridiculous to even think that. He’s done so well.

“He’s a young manager and he did terrific there last season.

“There has been a lot of investment and there are a lot of good players in that Aberdeen team.

“A lot will be realising what it takes and the demands on players.

“But Barry has done well before and he will continue to do well.”

Dons fans jeered Robson and the team after the final whistle on Wednesday as David Watson’s injury-time goal gave Killie a rare away win.

Aberdeen now face a massive clash with Hearts at Pittodrie tomorrow ahead of the Viaplay Cup final against Rangers next Sunday.

Asked about the Dons fans’ reaction, McInnes said: “Unfortunately for him, me and every other manager out there, it comes with the territory.

“We all need results. If you don’t win games you come under scrutiny.

"He has a good enough squad and he is a good enough manager to come through this to get the team going again.”

Meanwhile McInnes reckons Gary Mackay-Steven faces a massive four weeks at Killie.

The former Celtic winger, who played under McInnes with the Dons, has penned a contract until the end of the month after training with Killie for six weeks.

McInnes, who stuck Mackay-Steven on the bench at Pittodrie, added:

“It’s only for a month to help us with the fixtures in December.

“He’s a player I know well and he has his moments of quality. He’s still showing that through his training.

“It’s a big month for him. We want him to have an impact for us.

“He’s here to fight for a place like everybody else, but I know what he’s capable of.”
