Former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has refused to be drawn on if the club can win the Premier League title at the end of the season, but did say that the side look the ‘real deal.’

Villa had the perfect week as they came out as winners against both Man City and Arsenal over the last three days. John McGinn’ s goal maintained Villa’s place in third place in the Premier League table but moved them to within two points of current leaders Liverpool.

The current position and the last two results are now seeing the side being talked about as genuine title contenders. Smith, who led Villa back to the Premier League in 2019, delivered his verdict on Villa’s recent performance and a possible title charge.

“I think the team is fantastic at the moment and you only have to see Wednesday night’s game against Man City, today’s was a harder game,” he told the Villa Park Podcast after watching the game with the New York Villa fans. “I’ve not seen too many teams do what Villa did against Man City in the week.

“So at the moment I know everyone will play it down and I’ll continue to do so, one game at a time, but they look the real deal at the moment.

“I’m not even going there!” he responded when asked if Villa can win the Premier League. “Let’s make sure they continue doing what they’re doing and let’s see where they end up.”

Villa will look to build on the last two wins when they return to Premier League action next week. They take on Brentford at the G-tech Community Stadium, before hosting relegation-threatened Sheffield United at Villa Park in the final game before Christmas on Friday 22nd December.
