They are not good enough to rub shoulders with Bayern Munich or Manchester City or Real Madrid or Inter Milan or any of the other teams who will take their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Erik ten Hag's first Champions League campaign in charge of Man United is over - and it's not pretty. United finish bottom of a group featuring Bauern Munich, Copenhagen and Galatasaray with just one win, one draw and four defeats.

Four points is an inexcusable return for the three-time European champions as they crash out of Europe and it could be sometime until we see them back in this competition if their league form is anything to go by.

United supporters will be disheartened and a weekend trip to Anfield is unlikely to cheer them up.

United are knocked out of the Champions League bottom of their group with just four points and won't be dropping down to the Champions League either. Booes are ringing round Old Trafford, Bayern fans are celebrating, nightmare for Erik ten Hag.

Copenhagen have beaten Galatasaray and have qualified for the next round of the Champions League. United won't even be dropping to the Europa League after tonight.

The German supporters in the away end are in great spirits as they chant 'football's coming home'. They are hosting the Euros next year but the national team hasn't been very convincing. Five minutes of added time to be played.

The England captain is free in the box and meets the ball sweetly. His effort is powerful but just wide. Good chance.

Further changes as Kobbie Mainoo replaces Varane with Amrabat dropping into defence.

Coman makes way and on comes youngster Mathys Tel. United really going for it now with their attacking play.

Ten Hag makes a double change with two youngsters coming on. Off comes Garnacho and Antony, on in their place is Hannibal Mejbri and Facundo Pellistri.

It's delicious football as Coman toys with United's defenders on the edge of the box and a few passes later he gets the ball back from Kane and smashes his shot past Onana. United's European campaign looks over.

With Copenhagen leading United really do now need to throw caution to the wind and go for this. At least if they beat Bayern then they can say they did everything possible. So far this is quite a poor attacking display, but United have defended well.

Tuchel uses his bench as Musiala is replaced by Thomas Muller. He will want a goal tonight at one of English football's famous grounds.

Bayern break United down and Kimmich has space on edge of the box. He shoots but drags it well wide. Both goalkeepers with little to do so far.

Nightmare for United as Copenhagen take the lead in their group game. As it stands the Danes are going through regardless of if United win.

United's press is causing Bayern all sorts of problems as Fernandes wins the ball back and drags his shot wide from the edge of the box. He has to hit the target there.

Antony loses the ball near the halfway line and he clips Davies with a late tackle when trying to win possession back. Yellow card shown.

Untied carve a chance and Wan-Bissaka's cutback finds Fernandes in space on the edge of the box, he shoots first time and smashes it into the stands.

Antony is free and reigning down on goal but Kim is back and wins a goalkick with a brilliant slide tackle.

This is concerning for United's defence as Aaron Wan-Bissaka is now coming on to replace Luke Shaw. Nightmare for the hosts.

Bayern also make a change at fullback as Konrad Laimer comes on.

United's striker has starred in the Champions League this season but has made just nine touches tonight so far - the lowest out of any player on the pitch.

He's been largely outmuscled by Upamecano and Kim and must be smarter in how he can create space for himself. United's attack largely hinges on him and so far it's been slightly disappointing.

United finish the half off strong but can't fashion a shot on goal as Bayern defend well. It's been good from the hosts but they aren't doing much to threaten Manuel Neur's goal and Rasmus Hojlund has offered very little up top.

The hosts have managed the threat of Bayern well but now must start to try and show how they can hurt the German visitors.

Copenhagen and Galatasaray are drawing, if it stays like that and United win then they are through to the next round of the Champions League.

Nope Maguire can't keep playing, he can barely run with that groin injury and on comes Jonny Evans. Huge blow for United given Maguire's brilliant recent form.

The Englishman is wanting to carry on, Jonny Evans is warming up and it would be a big surprise if Maguire is able to keep playing. Substitution imminent you feel.

The United defender has just pulled up and immediately kicked the ball out of play. His groin seems to have gone and this is a big concern. Harry Kane comes over to check on his England team-mate.

United are looking so much more compact than they have in other games recently and Bayern are haing to be patient in their build-up play. Luke Shaw has his work cut out as the visitors continue to attack down his flank.

Bayern break from United's corner and Coman puts a cross on a plate for Sane to head in and open the scoring. The former Man City star somehow misses the ball and United clear.

Fernandes had a free-kick around 30 yards from goal and watched his effort clip the wall and go behind for a corner. The follow-up set-piece was pathetic.

JOE BERNSTEIN AT OLD TRAFFORD: Ten Hag will be pleased to see a better work ethic from his wingers. Garnacho has already nicked the ball off the Bayern defence a couple of times. Gives United hope.

The Bayern forward drifts through United's defence and is in the box before Maguire's crucial intervention stops him from getting a shot away. Brilliant run, poor finish.

Bayern supporters in the away end at Old Trafford are making so much noise and why not? Their team is already through to the next round and playing well tonight so far.

Coman tussles with Garnacho and comes off worse as he slides down the slope at the edge of the pitch and into the advertising boards with a big bump. Bayern players run over but hostilities are eventually settled.

Space opened up for him on the edge of the box and Shaw smashed it straight at Neuer. The Bayern goalkeeper punches behind for a corner that is cleared.

JOE BERNSTEIN AT OLD TRAFFORD: Harry Kane is going wherever he likes. At times he’s drifting back into midfield and it’s then hard for United to pick him up venturing forward. It is going to cause Maguire and Varane a problem and the England captain has already had the game’s first shot on target.

VAR has just had a look at a potential penalty after Jamal Musiala went down in the box. Replays showed he pretty much ran into Maguire before going down softly and play rightly continues.

United were already a goal down against Bournemouth at the weekend but are looking so much more positive tonight. They are fighting for every second ball and there is more confidence in everything they are doing. Bayern can change this in the blink of an eye though.

Coman beats Shaw for speed down the right-wing and Kane is begging for the ball in the box, it is eventually crossed but just a fraction too far away from the Bayern striker. A better corss and that would have been a goal.

JOE BERNSTEIN AT OLD TRAFFORD: Bruno Fernandes is trying to make United's midfield click so far tonight and went round every United player before kick off for an embrace. They need a captain’s showing from him tonight

United are just showing a few glimpses of their attacking talent with Garnacho and Antony both getting joy down either wings. The space is there for them to attack, end product is just missing at the minute.

Dalot gets to the byline and cuts a cross back that is blocked by Kimmich. Fernandes whips the corner in but easily cleared.

The visitors are camping inside United's half early with Harry Kane finding space in the box but eventually ruled offside.
