Manchester City's trip to Red Star Belgrade felt like a dead rubber - but it could be remembered as a historic night.

That is because academy starlet Micah Hamilton opened his account for the club on his senior debut in a 3-2 victory.

After a questionable run of results and an untimely injury to Erling Haaland, the emergence of Hamilton felt like an early Christmas present.

And Oasis legend Liam Gallagher said what every Man City fan was thinking on Thursday morning in a post that quickly went viral.

He wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: "Happy Christmas Micah Hamilton MCFC LG x."

The 20-year-old forward is no secret to die-hard City fans who have watched his progress since the age of nine.

Hamilton has thrived at every youth level for the Premier League champions and currently captains their Elite Development Squad.

But even casual supporters would have been introduced to the England Youth starlet in 2017 when manager Pep Guardiola singled him out for a pep talk.

Working as a ball boy, Hamilton went viral as the City boss urged him to help restart play faster during a Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.

Revealing what he told Hamilton at the time, the Spaniard said: "If there was a foul, no-one went to take the ball and start to play.

"There was five, ten seconds before someone goes to take the ball and start to play. When this happens everything is slow.

"So the ball boys were slow, everybody was slow. And we have to create in the game, to provoke the game. And we didn't for most of the time in the first half."

"In the second half, you could see immediately that the team was ready."
