Jarell Quansah makes blunt Liverpool admission after Joel Matip injury

Jarell Quansah scored his first goal for Liverpool in their Europa League defeat to Union SG on Thursday night

Jarell Quansah has set his sights on becoming first-choice for Liverpool after Joel Matip suffered an ACL injury.

The Cameroonian is expected to be out for the season after undergoing successful surgery on his knee, with Jurgen Klopp insisting he doesn’t need to sign a new centre-back to replace the injured defender.

In the absence of Matip, Liverpool still have Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez vying to start alongside Virgil van Dijk. Meanwhile, Quansah has established himself as an option in an impressive breakthrough season at Anfield after spending the second half of last year on loan at League One Bristol Rovers.

The 20-year-old has made 12 appearances for Klopp’s so far this season, and started their last two matches against Crystal Palace and Union SG - scoring his first goal for the club in the latter. And while it would be a surprise to see Quansah again retain his place at home to bitter-rivals Manchester United on Sunday, the centre-back is not shy about admitting his determination to cement his place in the Reds’ starting XI.

“At the start of the season when I’ve stayed and not gone on-loan I thought I want to play in these games,” Quansah told LFC TV following Thursday’s Europa League loss to Union SG.

“So obviously, it’s a shame what happened to Joel (Matip) and my condolences go to him, but my idea was to try and get over him anyway and try and be a starting centre-back in the Premier League. I’m just trying to push on and be the best centre-back I can be.”
