Shay Given has suggested Newcastle should move for David De Gea with Nick Pope out injured.

Pope has been Eddie Howe's No 1 at St James' Park since arriving in a £10million deal from Burnley in June 2022.

The England international played in all but one of the club's Premier League games last season, but is now expected to spend an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a dislocated shoulder against Manchester United earlier this month.

Since Pope's injury, backup stopper Martin Dubravka has stepped in between the sticks with former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius providing cover on the bench.

However, speaking on Sky Sports prior to the Magpies' EFL Cup quarter-final clash with Chelsea on Tuesday, Given suggested that both clubs would be wise to consider a move for De Gea.

Pope is expected to spend four months on the sidelines after undergoing shoulder surgery

'I think any top club even even Chelsea tonight. I'd be looking at De Gea.' Given said.

'Newcastle will be looking at De Gea. I think all the clubs should be looking at De Gea. He had the most clean sheets last year in the Premier League. 

'He had a couple of mistakes last year and people go "oh, he's gone." But I think he's only 33, he's still very young in goalkeeping terms. I think any club would be looking at him to take him on board.'

Despite considering a deal for De Gea a positive move for his former club, Given noted that if Newcastle were to be interested in signing the out-of-contract star, they could have done it already. 

'If they were going to get them they can sign them now and get them fit for January,' he added.

'They haven't done that because he's a free transfer so Newcastle mustn't be looking at him.'

Meanwhile, De Gea remains out of contract after leaving Manchester United in the summer

Asked her opinion on whether Newcastle should consider a move for De Gea, Karen Carney was less enthusiastic.

'No, I don't think so. I think his wages are astronomical, and that would cause a problem. 

'I think I'd be looking for a ball playing goalkeeper. I think that's where Newcastle potentially should go, someone very different from Nick Pope. 

'That's where I'd be looking and try and get that competition, not maybe not on the Arsenal levels but I think someone who's really comfortable at playing out from the back.'
