Who should start for Everton?

Everton play their final game of 2023 at Goodison Park tonight when they entertain newly crowned FIFA Club World Cup champions Manchester City.

While City were adding a fifth major trophy of the calendar year to their collection in Saudi Arabia, Everton were suffering double disappointment. After being cruelly knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties by Fulham, the Blues then suffered a harsh Premier League defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The 2-1 loss ended Sean Dyche's side's four-match league winning run. They will therefore be keen to bounce back against defending champions City, who have won just one of their last six league matches.

So how should Blues boss Dyche line-up this evening for the visit of Pep Guardiola's all-conquering team? Our writers have had their say...

Who could return for City?

Everton take on Manchester City in the Premier League on Wednesday night with matches continuing to come thick and fast for Sean Dyche's side over the festive period.

The Blues lost 2-1 to Tottenham at the weekend, a result which pushed City down to fifth place in the table with the reigning champions having been out of domestic action while winning the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia. Beating Brazilian team Fluminense in the final saw City lift a fifth major trophy in 2023.

City head to Goodison Park this evening with a few key players messing, while the hosts have injury concerns of their own.

Thelwell previews January business

Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell believes Everton are set for a relatively quiet January transfer window.

Sean Dyche's side are currently just one point above the relegation places at present but have fought back well following their 10-point deduction early this season.

“As we look to January, I can assure you that, whilst there may not be a great deal of transfer business taking place in the coming weeks, it does not mean the hard work is not continuing," Thelwell told evertonfc.com.

“Being reactive, whilst sometimes inevitable in football, is not a healthy permanent state within which to operate as a club. In that context, January is unlikely to be a busy month here.

“But hard work is ongoing to ensure a squad that has performed consistently well this season can continue to evolve and develop this season, in the summer and beyond.''

Warrington recalled

As per info via PlymouthLive, Everton youngster Lewis Warrington has been recalled from his loan spell with Championship outfit Plymouth Argyle, due to injury.

Warrington has played only four times for the Pilgrims this season and just twice in the Championship.

Argyle director of football Neil Dewsnip has stated that Warrington 'could be out for quite a while'. Dewsnip said: "He has gone back to Everton for rehab, could be out for quite a while I'm afraid. He has got a knee problem so they are assessing whether he needs surgery or not, they don't know yet."

Everton injury news ahead of Manchester City visit

Abdoulaye Doucoure is expected to miss Everton's clash with Manchester City.

Idrissa Gueye is also a doubt after being forced off in the first-half of the defeat against Tottenham Hotspur. The issues have left Everton's midfield department threadbare with Andre Gomes making his return to first-team action as Gueye's replacement, following a long layoff.

“No, I don’t think for City, that is a bit close," Dyche said on Doucoure. "He is making good progress and we are hoping he gets back on the grass over the next few days - not straight away with us, just to ease his return to fitness.

"[Young and Coleman] have probably got more of a chance of being around the squad but we are going to have to be careful because we keep getting players back fit and then we start running out again. And Idrissa has got an injury and it doesn’t look that promising on the first showing. We will find out more tomorrow and over the next couple of days.

"We are trying to balance the games programme against the squad against the injuries and the risk and reward of players coming in. Even with Andre, it wasn’t ideal for him to go on so early in the game. I thought he handled it very well physically but I had plans on maybe putting him into the game later but needs must at the moment.”

Everton interested in Amad Diallo

Everton are reportedly showing an interest in Manchester United attacker Amad Diallo.

Les Bons Conceil Du Sports editor Seb Ecrivain has claimed that the Blues are among the clubs interested in the Ivorian on a temporary basis.

Amad has been sidelined through injury in recent months and was in contention for a place in the squad to face Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

In a tweet, it has been claimed that the Blues are among those vying to sign the talented winger. He wrote: "Manchester United ready to loan 21-year-old in January. Sunderland, Everton, Fulham, Crystal Palace, Wolves and Southampton are showing keen interest. After a knee injury, Amad is on the pre-list for the Africa Cup of Nations."
