Ianis Hagi was forced into a painful spilt from Rangers earlier this season but tied the knot with the true love of his life in a lavish Christmas Day wedding.

The Romanian is currently on loan at Spanish side Alaves and took full advantage of the La Liga winter break as he walked down the aisle with sweetheart Elena Tanase in a mega Bucharest bash with legendary dad Gheorghe wowing the 400 guests as he displayed a different kind of fancy footwork which made him one of the world’s top players in his heyday as he took centre stage on the dance floor.

Hagi proposed to his girlfriend in the summer while he was still at Rangers when he popped the question during a romantic break to Paris, surrounded by flowers in front of the City of Love’s landmark Eiffel Tower. The wedding made headline news in Romania with his wife stealing the show in a floor-length red dress from American designer Marchesa. No expense was spared in the glitzy affair which took place in the north of the city.

With many of Rangers’ summer signings struggling to hit the heights expected at Ibrox, the decision by former boss Michael Beale to allow the 25-year-old to leave Glasgow was questioned. Hagi was initially signed on loan from Genk when Steven Gerrard was in charge before his move was made permanent and he penned an extension shortly after Beale took over, while he was out with a long term ACL injury, tying him to the club until 2026.

That was why the decision to allow him to leave came as a surprise. Hagi said when he left for Spain: “Gers, where should I start? I was just a kid signing for this amazing, unique football club and my dream was to represent the club in the best way possible on the European stage and deliver trophies, because ultimately that’s what I thought will make me fall in love with the club and make me happy. Well, I managed to do that, but that wasn’t it. It was you, the fans!”

Current boss Philippe Clement was recently quizzed on the possibility of a return and the Belgian said: “We will see what happens, because this is not just a decision of mine, but also of the club."

Hagi took time to find his feet in Spain but started to impress under boss Luis Garcia, however, he did end the first half of the season with a stinging blast after a 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid. Garcia said: "Today was a game for him to have taken a step forward... and he hasn't. He played a bad game, we have to recover and continue lifting him up.”
