Rangers are pursuing a left-back in the January window after Philippe Clement made Fabio Silva his first Rangers signing.

The Light Blues have agreed a deal to sign the Portuguese striker on-loan from Wolves for the second half of the season and he will be registered when the window opens on January 1. Rangers have beaten off stiff competition from the likes of Union Berlin, Wolfsburg, Borussia Monchengladbach, Genoa and Monza to land Silva. Silva could make his debut in the New Year fixture against Kilmarnock if he gets international clearance in time.

Rangers and Celtic had both been offered the 21-year-old on-loan. Rangers put themselves in the box seat by agreeing to pay a substantial five figure fee towards his weekly wage. Clement and new director of football Nils Koppen have also held talks with the Portuguese under-21 star and convinced him he should move to Ibrox. Clement has made a centre forward a priority as he looks to push for the title.

The chance to push for silverware and to play in the knockout stages of the Europa League were big factors in landing Silva. Wolves signed Silva for around £35 million three years ago but he has struggled to nail down a regular starting spot in recent seasons.

He had spells at Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven last season. A striker was a priority for Rangers and Silva was amongst their top targets. Clement said: “I am delighted we have been able to secure the signing of Fabio, he is a highly-rated striker and it is fantastic to have him joining our squad for the remainder of the season.

“He is a young player who already has some great experience in his career in both England and in Europe, and I am looking forward to working with him moving forward.”

Rangers are also still actively pursuing a left-back in the January window. Croat Borna Barisic is out of contract in the summer and Ridvan Yilmaz has struggled to hold down that position. Philadelphia Union’s Kai Wagner and PSV Eindhoven’s Fredrik Oppegard have both been scouted by Rangers in recent weeks.
