A Sunderland fan’s ideal punishment for the person whose idea it was to put up Newcastle United signs left a radio host stunned.

Sunderland were forced to make a grovelling apology to their raging fans after pictures showed the interior of one stand at the Stadium of Light had been done over in Newcastle decor ahead of the first Tyne-Wear derby since 2016 on Saturday in the FA Cup.

Newcastle took over the £600 corporate area ahead of their match-up in the early kick-off on Saturday by plastering banners across the walls cheering on the Toon Army. One of the artwork read: “We are United”, another said: “Keep the black and white flying high”, while another even crossed out the “Ha’way the lads” slogan, replacing it with the Toon tongued “Howay”.

And the fan call-in regarding the naïve decoration didn’t disappoint as one furious Mackem couldn’t hold back in what his punishment for the brains behind the idea would be. He said: “I think whoever that is should be forced to apologise in the centre circle at half-time or before the game. I think their name and address should be posted by the club.”

While the fan's initial comments seemed brutal, the idea of their name and home address being given up left the host aghast as he struggled to find the words at first before telling the fan that such a punishment wouldn’t be the best of ideas.

The comments also proved too much for most level-headed people on social media, with one commenting on Twitter: “Think the name and address is a bit much like”, a second said: “Dishing out addresses is a bit too far.” A third quipped: “Yeah, let’s just pop their info out there. Maybe a photo of all their family members too?” While a Geordie added: “Rattled beyond belief”.

It’s the first meeting between the two sides since March 2016 when a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park proved pivotal as Newcastle were relegated from the Premier League, two points adrift of Sunderland. However, as Newcastle returned to the top-flight, Sunderland were relegated rock bottom the following season and even dropped to League One.

Under former Rangers boss Michael Beale, Sunderland are sitting in sixth place in the Championship. And will be relishing the chance to extend their unbeaten record against a weary Newcastle to ten games – last losing in August 2011.
