Wales international Charlie Savage is in demand with Derby, Stockport and an unnamed Championship club all chasing the Reading midfielder's signature.

The Royals have told all three suitors that Savage, who left boyhood club Manchester United last summer in search of regular first-team football, is not for sale.

Savage, 20, has not started a game for Reading since the FA Cup second round defeat at Eastleigh on December 3.

Savage - the son of former Premier League star turned TV pundit Robbie - left Old Trafford following advice from those around him that he would need to be playing football to kickstart his career.

Prior to his first cap, Wales manager Rob Page revealed that he was glad Charlie had found first-team football and led him to the next stage of his development.

"I know what Robbie went through when he left Manchester United years ago to go to Crewe,” said Page.

“I was in contact with Charlie over the last few months and told him he needed to go out and play competitive football if he wanted a career and if he wanted international football. He took that advice on board, he went to Reading, where he is playing well and scoring goals.

“He was on stand-by with us in September and now he gets the next stage in his development and he deserves it."

EFL pundit Carlton Palmer believes that Reading's off-field issues could eventually force them to sell Savage, despite claiming that he was so far off the market.

He told Football League World: "Reading are in a difficult position. On one hand, the off-field uncertainty and financial issues they face might dictate that they should sell, but on the other hand to attract a buyer, they need to retain their league one status, and that means keeping their better players.
