Piers Morgan calls out Megan Rapinoe on Twitter over 'lack of passion for her country'
Megan Rapinoe may have retired from football, but the USWNT legend is still finding herself on the end of a social media rollicking from Piers Morgan
Piers Morgan blasted Megan Rapinoe and the US women's national team with a fierce message.
The controversial news anchor, 58, has always taken a particular dislike to Rapinoe, the two-time Women's World Cup winner, who is also known for her activism away from and on the pitch. Rapinoe, 38, divided opinion when she knelt during the national anthem in solidarity with former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, to protest police brutality and racial injustice.
As well as becoming the first white athlete to make the gesture in 2016, she also stopped singing the national anthem while representing her nation. Despite the fact she retired last year after Sweden knocked the USA out of the World Cup, Morgan still took some time out of his day to have a huge dig at her on X, formerly Twitter.

Morgan came across a video of the USA junior ice hockey team celebrating their victory by singing the Star Spangled Banner in unison. They overcame Sweden to win the gold medal at the IIHF World Junior Championship.
Many US fans on social media praised the team's show of unity and patriotism. While also doing the same, Morgan found an opportunity to take a dig at Rapinoe and her former team-mates.

Morgan retweeted the video and said: “Brilliant. If you can’t bring yourself to sing your National Anthem with this kind of passion, don’t play sport for your country," while also tagging Rapinoe and the USWNT on X.
Considering Rapinoe did not interact with the video, you could say it was an unprovoked swipe from the former Britain's Got Talent host. It's not the first time he has poured scorn over Rapinoe and her team-mates. When they got knocked out of the World Cup, Morgan used his column in the New York Post to vehemently chastise Team USA.
After Rapinoe missed a crucial penalty in the penalty shoot-out which saw them exit the competition, Morgan slammed the team as "unpatriotic losers". He added: "It was peak Rapinoe: Supremely arrogant, annoyingly self-aggrandising, and all about the money.
"It’s hard to imagine an American sporting team that’s made the country feel less proud than this bunch of 'activist' prima donnas."
